Carbonates are generally insoluble in water and soluble in acids. In reaction to acid and during thermal decomposition, carbonates release carbon dioxide and water. Due to this, carbonates are often used to synthesize various elemental oxides through calcination.
Chlorides and chloride salts tend to be highly soluble in water and will generally dissolve in other common solvents as well.
Fluorides and their salts are most commonly employed in the industrial process of hydrofloric acid.
