Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate

Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate

Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate or copper (ii) sulfate, is blue, inorganic salt with the formula: CuSO4*5H2O. This compound has been applied to a variety of useful niche applications throughout human history, and can be found as the blue mineral chalcanthite. Chemical preparation generally involves copper metal or oxide and hot sulfuric acid, concentrated or diluted.
Agriculture
Copper (ii) sulfate is most popular as a fungicide and aquatic herbicide, but is also used to inhibit and remove certain bacteria, parasites, and snails. It is important to note that copper ions are highly toxic to fish and that commercially available copper sulfate products are diluted for this reason.

Additional Notes:
* Copper (ii) sulfate has been around for a while and has several informal names, here are a few: Roman vitriol and blue vitriol.
* Copper sulfate pentahyrdrate is used to manufacture green fireworks, but should not be mixed with chlorates, as it decomposes them.
* When in anhydrous form, CuSO4 is a pale green or grayish white powder.
