Conflict Minerals

Conflict Minerals

Conflict minerals are raw materials that originate from parts of the world in which conflict, corruption, and exploitation has affected the mining and trade of such materials. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and its adjacent regions have been a major focus of the conflict mineral laws and acts. The exploitative pursuit of coltan minerals in these regions have been shown to fuel violence and fund militant groups doing the exploiting. Coltan materials include tin (cassiterite), tantalum (coltan), tungsten (wolframite), and gold and their derivatives.
