Aluminum Fluoride

Aluminum Fluoride

Aluminum Fluoride is an inorganic compound used primarily in the production of aluminum. This colorless solid can be prepared synthetically but also occurs in nature.

Metallurgical
Aluminum fluoride is an important additive for the production of aluminum by electrolysis. Together (with cryolite) it lowers the melting point to below 1000 C and increases the conductivity of the solution, and thus the total efficiency of the production. It is into this molten salt that is aluminum oxide is dissolved and then electrolyzed to give bulk Al metal.

Glass (Optical)
As an optical glass material, aluminum fluoride has a low refractive index, good mechanical strength, and is water resistant. Its low refractive index makes it a prime choice for anti-reflective coatings.
Aluminum fluoride can be seen used in optical glass, fluxes, and coatings.
